> What does this passage mean to you? Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me,
> and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and
> brothers and sisters, yes, even his own life, he cannot be my
> disciple."
>
> Hate is a pretty strong word. He didn't say, dislike, care for, put up
> with, or love. Why did He use the word hate?

---Our Lord is using hyperbole here. He is saying that our love for Him
should make our love for self and others seem like hate by comparison. Hope
that helps. God bless,
Derek

Old Testament Jonah 2:1-9

Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, saying, "I
called to the LORD out of my distress,
and he answered me;
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
and you heard my voice.
You cast me into the deep,
into the heart of the seas,
and the flood surrounded me;
all your waves and your billows
passed over me.
Then I said, `I am driven away
from your sight;
how shall I look again
upon your holy temple?'
The waters closed in over me;
the deep surrounded me;
weeds were wrapped around my head
at the roots of the mountains.
I went down to the land
whose bars closed upon me forever;
yet you brought up my life from the Pit,
O LORD my God.
As my life was ebbing away,
I remembered the LORD;
and my prayer came to you,
into your holy temple.
Those who worship vain idols
forsake their true loyalty.
But I with the voice of thanksgiving
will sacrifice to you;
what I have vowed I will pay.
Deliverance belongs to the LORD!"

The Epistle Romans 9:1-5

I am speaking the truth in Christ-- I am not lying; my conscience confirms
it by the Holy Spirit-- I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my
heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from
Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh.
They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the
covenants, the giving of the law,
