then why does 1 Tim 3:16 say he was "taken up?"

16Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared
in a body,
was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels,
was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world,
was taken up in glory.

Excellent research concerning John 3:13. Thus that whole argument of
the difference between "ascending" under one's own power rather than
being "taken" like Enoch is invalid. It has always been my
understanding that Jesus' words that "no man has ascended into heaven"
means that NOBODY had gone to the spiritual Heaven prior to him and
this includes Enoch.

Bart, I don't think he mixed up what you said. You said,

"But the orthodox teaching of the church is that our state after death
is trans-temporal, i.e., outside of time. Hell is in "eternity"
not "forever"."

His question is valid: "Where in the bible do you find that death is
trans-temporal?"

The references to death in my Bible are consistant with the hypothesis
that death is a state of total unconsciousness--no thoughts, no
knowledge, no devices, and--for the wicked after their final
destruction--no resurrection.

God bless.
Paul.
