Hello all,
In the Book of Jeremiah, God says, "The heart is
deceitful above all things, and desperately
wicked...."
In our modern, liberal, politically correct day and
age, that statement sounds very foreign.
Everyone wants to think of themselves as being good,
said Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong to all who would listen,
but very few actually want to DO or BE good, when it
comes right down to it -- they just want to LOOK or
APPEAR good!
Now, that's a pessimistic appraisal of human nature if
I ever heard one, and one that is not easy to accept.
However, once you begin to think about this subject in
depth, you begin to understand the truth of the
matter.
For example, back in the beginning, at the Garden of
Eden, the first man and first woman had all the
advantages anyone could wish for.
Not only did they literally have EVERYTHING physically, they also had
EVERYTHING spiritually, because they walked every evening in person
with no less a Personage than GOD HIMSELF!
The Bible doesn't reveal how long this went on. But you can be sure
that He was instructing them every day in His way of life, and was
answering their questions on how to make life work.
And of course on the Sabbath, they most likely spent the whole day with
Him!
They had no doubt that God was real. They had no doubt that He was Who
and What He said He was. They also knew a lot about His way of life,
or should have.
But then one day, Satan came into the Garden and struck up a
conversation with Eve.
In the end, he persuaded her to violate one of God's instructions.
Most of us do not think of the enormity of what happened then. For
example, how could Adam and Eve possibly have done such a horrible
thing? Were they nuts?
To put this another way, they believed a total stranger because he told
them what they wanted to hear, whereas God didn't always tell them what
they wanted to hear.
So they made a choice to believe LIES rather than the TRUTH, and to act
accordingly.
And mankind has been doing that ever since.
This whole line of reasoning started because I found it simply
astounding that the majority of people prefer to believe known liars
and their lies, rather than the truth, in almost everything they do or
think.
And it isn't a matter that they are deceived, because they could always
FIND the truth if they really wanted to -- it's just that the truth
doesn't seem to interest them one little bit.
It was the same with Adam and Eve, and continues to this day.
