So how does "free will" not absolve me, but allegedly absolves God?

The short answer is "yes". The long answer is "yes but."
The root of "voluntary" is "vol-" which means "will". Are
our acts willfull? Yes, lots of them are. Are they
"freewillfull?" No. (Not in the modern sense.)
FWIW, my view is that _anything_ done in faith (cooking,
hiking, any bodily function, etc.) is a good work. One
receives a gift of God and gives thanks for it, which is
Adam's original state and function. And _anything_
done out of faith is a sin (charity, fasting, prayer,
etc.)
Acts done in faith strengthen faith. Acts done out of
faith harden one against faith. If I have no faith and
endow an entire children's hospital, I've only confirmed
in myself a belief in my own goodness, which can not lead
to salvation (but rather leads away from it.)
