You, who confuse Geisler and Gerstner accuse me of not reading
Shedd, because I have not memorized everything he said?
But actually the part you mention is one that I especially studied.
His long winded speech about "extent."
Many words trying to cover up the real truth.
"The question, What is the extent of the atonement? now means:
To whom is the atonement EFFECTUALLY extended. ....
To whom does God purpose to APPLY its benefits?" v.2,p464.
He next cites the WCOF, about "God passing by" and extending
and withholding mercy.
"In these passages, to "extend" mercy means, to effectually apply
Christ's redemption, not merely to offer it. Because, in the latter sense
God does not "withhold" mercy from any man. Is grace impaired in
its extent? We affirm it to be extended to everyone that is, or was,
or ever shall be delivered from the pit." p. 465,466
Thus Shedd, and Owen whom he quotes above show that God
extends this mercy ONLY to the elect.
There is no REAL offer of mercy to all mankind.
In seeking to obviate the passages which speak of Christ dying for
ALL MEN, he writes,
"Again, the preposition "for" is sometimes understood to denote
not INTENTION, but value or sufficiency. To say that Christ
died "for" all men then means, that his death is sufficient to
expiate the guilt of all men." p. 467.
The INTENTION of God in the death of Christ is to
SAVE all men. Period. Those who believe are saved.
He goes on and on.
But the BOTTOM line is the STANDARD Calvinistic doctrine.
Man IS NOT ABLE to receive the grace of God in Christ.
God must force the gift upon him.
So we have yet again the nonsense that God makes a
REAL offer when in actual fact the offer CANNOT be
accepted!
I do believe that you Calvinists have some kind of "glasses"
on which prevent you from seeing the obvious.
