Heb. 9:27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after
this comes judgment,
Actions have true significance this side of death. Those who in this
life do not accept Christ's offer of salvation will have no "second
chance" in the next life. History has true significance.

I believe that God's greatest gift if the freedom of choice (between God
and the sin) and that God makes the judgement responding to our
decision. Those who go to the Godless status choose it freely. The hell
is the petrified will to be in sin, w/o God.
Hebrew 9:27 only states that there is no reincarnation, only one life
and a judgement based on that life. In that time there was no "judgement
- krisis" w/o audition of the parties. My given image is not for second
chance just for the summary of the choices made during the life. As you
get older your choices get more and more restricted based on your
previous decisions. IMHO God will send everyone to the place (w/ Him or
w/o Him) where the person wants to go. This life is finished not when
our heart stops beating but when we stop to "see through a glass,
darkly; but then face to face" (1 Cor 13:12)
I agree w/ you that the final judgment will be different, that will be
the solemn proclamation of the personal judgements.
I also agree w/ you that the hell is not necessarily the lake of fire,
it is the status w/o God. There is no evil as principle, just the
deficiency of good.

Luther had (at least) one. It seems to apply to Enron et al.,
very well:
