And just what is the alternative? The legitmacy and efficacy of the
principle of autonomy? If this is accepted, then there is no need for
the idea of God speaking to men to begin with. It is exactly because
man *cannot* speak intelligently to himself without God and because the
sinner has sent God out of his life that God in condenscending grace
comes back to him. But He asks men to accept Him at His word for what
He is: the indispensable presupposition of all intelligent human
predication. This in turn declares the creature to be what he is
essential -dependent. Sola scriptura rest upon the internal testimony
of the Spirit even as He testifies to the assurance of our salvation.
And when one actually thinks this through, all the indication of the
divinity of Scripture would lose their effectiveness and would actually
accomplish the very opposite of what they are meant to accomplish if
they were taken out of their relation of utter dependence upon the
testimony of the Spirit. Objectively, then, these indicators do show
the Scriptures to be the living Word of God.
The majesty of its style, the harmony of its parts, and other such
things all indicate the Scriptures alone to be the Word of God. Over
1/4 of the Scriptures were prophetic at its writting. What are the
odds of these prophecies which have been fulfilled, coming to fruition
is indeed the Scriptures are not the very Word of God? And literally
fulfilled I might add. Coming to Christ, the Word of God is equal to
coming to the Scriptures as the sole source of authority requires the
same act of submission and surrender. And this very act of surrender
and faith comes in consequence of the ministry and testimony of the
Holy Spirit.
As soon as one removes the doctrine of sola scriptura, he admits to his
own autonomy. It can be no other way. And in so doing, removes the
only Absolute testimony of God on which to adjudicate. Therefore all
that is left to him is relative and arbitrary. Nothing can be placed
along side of Scripture without placing it in actuality, over
Scripture. ALL of this is based upon the false and unscriptural
position that man is not totally depraved. This is nothing more than
fallen man, in yet another form, resisting his creaturehood and his
total dependence upon Go
